Teeth Whitening / Bleaching
Scaling and whitening are concepts that are often confused with each other. In fact, what patients expect is for the tooth color to lighten at the end of the treatment in both procedures. However, after removing dental tartar and plaque on the tooth surface with dental scaling, brown and yellow stains on the teeth are removed by polishing. Since there will be a clean tooth surface, the teeth will appear lighter in color. However, your actual tooth color does not change.
The whitening process is an application that is carried out with chemical agents, sometimes with a laser light device, and sometimes without light. If we evaluate our teeth with the traditional scale, we number them with color values from white to yellow, from white to gray, as A1 - A2 - A3 - A3,5 - A4 - B1 - B2 - B3 - C1 - C2 - .... After the whitening process, our goal is to lighten the color tone of your teeth and bring them closer to the starting values on the scale.
Is it possible for the color to revert after undergoing teeth whitening?
After the whitening process, we strongly suggest not having tea, coffee and cigarettes, especially during the first 10 days. In addition, it is necessary to stay away from coloring foods such as tomato paste, lots of tomatoes and red wine. Once the teeth regain their water content in the days after the procedure, we can gradually return to our normal routine diet. However, it should not be forgotten that foods and beverages consumed normally, regardless of the whitening process, cause discoloration of the teeth.
Is there sensitivity after teeth whitening?
Although there is some sensitivity in the teeth, we prevent sensitivity with the desensitizing agents we apply.
Is it harmful to have teeth cleaned?
The answer is absolutely no. Tooth stones that are not cleaned cause an inflammatory condition in the gums, which we call gingivitis. The gum changes from its pink, rough orange peel appearance and takes on a redder, smoother, shiny, appearance, especially starting from the triangular gum part between the teeth, which we call the papilla. After proper dental cleaning, the gums will look healthy after a few days. Your doctor can write you a prescription for medical support when necessary. It is important to stick to this prescription and follow the practices recommended by your physician.
